Use The TAYLOR SWIFT Business Strategy to GROW Your Business
Taylor Swift is a talented singer, a songwriting star, and a very accomplished artist. But today we're going to talk about why she's a brilliant marketer. Her relatable songs and ability to connect with her audience has kept her relevant and her music trending for over 15 years. Let's dive into what she's doing to keep her fans hooked on her every move and her world tours sold out, and what you can learn from her as a business owner to keep your audience your biggest fans.
My name is Megan and I teach business owners to go from confused to confident on social media. I help my clients build a loyal community, get quality clients from Instagram, and build a profitable business. Let's get started.
Taylor Swift's authentic storytelling, personal connection with her fans, and strategic branding she has become one of the most successful singer-songwriters of her time. The first point I'm going over, and in my opinion the most important one, is that she plans every single move out years ahead of time. She has come out and said she planned things up to three years in advance including her concerts, her albums, her merch, and even her music videos. Just one example is that Taylor Swift announced she was going to be releasing her new 1989 album on August 9th. The ninth day of the eighth month on her sold out Eras tour where she was wearing all blue. Because she plans things out so far ahead of time, it gives her audience a chance to theorize when she's going to be announcing things next and it gets her audience really excited. She even explained to Entertainment Weekly that "She's trained them to be that way. She loves that they like the cryptic hint dropping because as long as they like it she'll keep doing it. It's fun it feels mischievous and playful." By planning all of these things out ahead of time she has a set schedule by when she has to release things and it keeps her on track. This is why she's held herself to releasing so much music and why she has received more number one albums than any other female in history.
The second point I'm going over is how much she teases her audience with Easter eggs and provides mystery. I touched on this a little bit when she mentioned how fun it is to release little hints about what's coming next that she has planned out for three years in advance, but this is one of the biggest things that business owners should take away from her marketing strategy. By referencing something old or by referencing something that is soon to come in her music videos or posts, she's doing this to purposefully increase buzz and excitement about her songs, her merch, and her concerts. This excitement even gets her older songs to start re-trending when she talks about them or when she's re-recording them. Another example of teasing is that at every concert of hers people get a light up a wristband that they get to wear and fans try to predict the next album she's going to release based off the color that comes up on the wristband. Taylor Swift could easily just announce when she's going to be releasing all of her new albums, however, she purposefully keeps it a secret to keep people talking about it and wondering and guessing when the right time will be. Which then keeps her top of mind and relevant. People love trying to figure things out for themselves and connect the dots so providing some type of mystery is a really great way to keep people talking about you even after you're not posting as much.
The next point I'm going to go over is how relatable Taylor Swift is. People say they are going to be her 'true forever fan' because of just how relatable she is. Her songs cover every single part of her ideal listeners lives from the sad to the happy to everything in between they can relate to her music. Taylor Swift is also really known for showing up unapologetically herself she tends to be really funny and her fans feel a connection to her and like they actually know her without ever having met her. And studies show that the more you feel like you know someone, the more you're willing to actually buy from them so this is a really good strategy on her part. Taylor Swift is also really open about her imperfections about what she's struggling with on the day-to-day and her insecurities. She sings about the hardship she's gone through the heartbreak she's had. While most other artists are only talking or posting about the highlights of their careers. As a business owner, what you can take away from this is by showing behind the scenes what you're learning and your imperfections you can actually be more relatable to your audience. They don't need to see you as perfect, they just need to see the value that you're bringing to them.
The last point I'm going to go over that was really smart of Taylor Swift in her marketing strategy is the way she increases demand. I majored in economics in college so this stuff is really interesting to me. But if you've never heard of supply and demand, they do have an inverse relationship. Meaning that when supply goes down, demand is naturally going to go up. So how Taylor Swift uses this to her advantage is that she releases CDs or merch for a very limited time. Now in the buyer's mind, they know that this item is only available for a certain amount of hours or a certain amount of days and they're more willing to actually make that purchase now. She also will only have a certain amount of each merchandise available so when it's sold out it's sold out and you can't get it again.
Okay I know we covered a lot so here's some key takeaways for you guys. Number one is know your audience. Taylor Swift knows who she's talking to inside and out and that's exactly why her audience feels like she has a personal connection to them. Number two is planning ahead is key. If you know what you're going to do for the next two or three years it's all mapped out for you already, you're more likely to actually follow through with your plan and you can actually backtrack to tease your audience and what's coming next. Number three is build a strong relationship with your audience. The more they know you, the more they're likely to buy from you. Number four is be genuinely appreciative when good things happen in your business and clients make your day, be sure to express your gratitude. And number five is get excited! If you're showing your passion that you love what you do every day, people are going to feed off of that and get just as excited as you are.
