Instagram Threads App: Business Opportunity?
I'm sure you've heard all about the new Instagram threads app. It's the app that has the nickname of "Twitter killer" and has over 30 million downloads in just 16 hours. But what is it, and is there an opportunity for your business on the platform? Let's talk all about it.
At the end of this post I'm going to go through an easy way to implement threads into your marketing strategy.
My name is Megan and I teach business owners to go from confused to confident on Instagram. I help my clients build a loyal community, get quality clients, and make their business more profitable.
There are a lot of questions around this new app. So what is it? Threads is a meta-owned app that is linked to your Instagram profile. It's currently in version one of its existence and it has pretty basic features so far. Adam Mosseri (the head of Instagram) has been putting out a lot of information about the updates that are currently in progress for the platform. The app really mimics Twitter in the way that it is copy focused, there's threads of conversation, and there's a repost feature that is very similar to the retweet feature. It's only been up for a few days but from what I've seen so far it's really light-hearted, fun, laid-back content that really shows off your authenticity. Brands are using it to their advantage to show off their personality and use memes to make jokes with their audiences.
Should you join threads? The app is still in the very beginning of its existence so there is a huge push of its content right now. What that means is that Meta is actually promoting the use of the platform by pushing out your profile and content more than usual. This is very similar to when TikTok and reels first came out and the people who were the first to use those features had a higher chance of "going viral" I've only had the app for about eight hours now and I'm already up to 218 followers and I've only posted six threads. So if this is something you're interested in and you want to hop on a trend really early I recommend getting on threads and seeing if you like the platform. Keep in mind the vibe of this platform is a little different than other social media which means you're going to have to create content differently. I'm liking the authenticity of all the content on there and the great news is that when you go to create content it actually is shorter to make because there's no highly curated video or photo needed. People are really encouraged to show up just as themselves on the app and not really post anything that's super edited.
I know this new app has been really controversial but I'd really like to see what you think about it in the comments below. Do you think it's too similar to Twitter? Do you think it's a refreshing break from seeing really highly edited curated content in other places? Tell me what you think.
So how can you use threads to your advantage in your business? Number one on this platform is going to be showing your personality. Don't spend hours creating anything on this platform just post your own ideas and your own opinions and your own words. Feel free to stick to your main categories of content whether it's educational, funny, inspirational, and motivational just make sure it's more of a laid-back casual version of it.
So how to easily implement this into your current marketing plan? Number one is you can actually share your Instagram threads as an Instagram story and an Instagram post straight from the threads app. This is just another great way to get creative and repurpose this threads content and show it to more people. Number two, since this platform is growing so fast a lot of people are spending a good chunk of time on it. Use this to your advantage by posting market research questions to get really honest answers this will also start conversation with potential clients or customers.
You can also use other people's threads and repost them with your own opinion or take on the matter. This is less work on your end and can actually start a discussion that really shows off what you know and that you're the expert at what you do. The nice part is when you set up your actual threads account, you can actually import your bio and your name from Instagram.
