Sometimes people aren't that nice. Just because there's a screen between two people sometimes they feel the need to say whatever they want about the other person. And as a business owner, you need to protect your online image, your reputation, and your brand. So let's walk through some really quick ways you can easily limit those unwanted messages and comments.
My name is Megan and I teach business owners to go from confused to confident on social media. I help you build a loyal community, get more clients, and build a more profitable business.

Let's talk about comments. There are three levels of unwanted comments that you're going to have to deal with. The first level is when someone comments a different opinion than your own. So they go on your post and put something that is different from what you were just saying and has an opposing view. This is the level where you just ignore the comment. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Engagement is engagement. These types of comments actually create good discussion and are totally fine if you just leave there and ignore. The next level of comment is when someone is spamming you, making fun of you, or says something that goes against the core of what you believe in and what you stand for. These types of comments are perfect to delete. You don't have to address the person, don't cause any drama, just delete the comment and move on. This will be a lot easier for you as a business owner rather than than letting it sink in and getting frustrated or maybe reaching out to that person just simply delete it and move on. This can be especially hard if the comments are making fun of you in some way, trust me I've had even these types of comments before, and all you can really do is delete them and not let it affect you. The third level of comments is when someone's really harsh, rude, and threatening. This is where you want to, one delete the comment, but also on top of that block the user. As business owners, we don't have time for people who try to bring us down, only people who we want to work with and will help us move forward in our careers. Immediately block them, move on.

Let's move into the actionable steps you can do to limit these unwanted comments and and messages now. So the first thing you can do is go to your profile on Instagram press the three bars in the top to go to your settings. From there you want to scroll down to where it says comment settings. Click on that and from there you'll be able to actually block certain people from just commenting on your videos. This is kind of a sly way to half block someone if it's someone that you may know who will notice if you block them. But this way they can't leave comments. The next step is you want to go down to to limited interactions. Instagram will actually select groups of people that they will limit their comments and messages from and you won't be able to see them unless you actually approve of them. They say that this doesn't affect your reach at all in the home feed or explore page, but somehow I don't know if that is possible if they are limiting certain people's interactions how that wouldn't affect it. The next step you want to take is going to hidden words. This allows you to hide offensive comments and hide offensive messages. So you can create a custom word list where you will actually be able to type in any word or phrase that you never want to see in your comments or messages. This can actually include emojis as well. So if you're getting a lot of spam messages that have the same intro or the same types of words in them you can actually make sure you never get a message like that ever again. I person personally think this is the best way to limit your comments and messages because it's very specific to the different types of words that spam accounts might use. You can also make this very custom to the experiences you've had with spammers rather than Instagram going and recommending groups of people to limit you from. This gives you more control rather than just letting Instagram decide for you. Don't forget that spam accounts generally won't have a profile picture and they'll usually have a lot of numbers in their user name so that's something to really look out for when you get a random follow or random message from someone that you don't know. What I do is whenever I get a follow from a spam account like that, they usually don't have any followers, lots of numbers in their username like I said, I will immediately remove them as a follower and move on. That way I don't have a bunch of spam followers who are decreasing my engagement rate because they never comment or like any of my stuff.
